The Do’s and Don’ts of Job Interviews
Picture this: You’ve finally landed an interview for your dream job at a top firm. After years of hard work—both academically and professionally—this is your chance to prove yourself. But with an oversaturated job market and fierce competition, how do you ensure you stand out? Lucky for you, I’ve compiled a quick guide on how YOU can land the job of your dreams and absolutely crush your next interview!
1. On-time is late, 5 minutes early is on time.
I remember one of the first tips I ever learned for an interview was from my high school business teacher, who always told us “On time is late, 5 minutes early is on time.” I have carried this piece of advice with me to every interview, and I definitely believe it makes a good and lasting first impression.
2. Dress to impress.
Always show up dressed for the job. If you want the part, you have to look the part. A white blouse, a nice blazer, and a confident expression is always the way to go. Also, don’t be afraid to dress according to the role. For example, if it’s a retail job, wear clothes from that particular brand to show them your dedication and enthusiasm.
3. Highlight your strengths.
If there’s something you’re really good at, don’t be afraid to highlight that! Tell your interviewer about that project you’ve been working on or that class that you really enjoyed. It never hurts to be passionate about the things you like. In fact, companies are always looking for ambitious people that love what they do! And most importantly, be confident and be yourself. As cliché as this sounds, it is also the best way to shine. Everyone has a unique talent and vision that only they can bring- use yours.
4. Make personal connections.
If you want to have a lasting impact and stand out amongst all the other applicants, you have to find a way to connect with the interviewer. Do your research about the company, and come prepared. Match the interviewer’s energy, and see how they feel about certain things. If you have something in common, express that. A shared connection makes you more memorable and can leave a lasting impact.
5. Be prepared to ask questions.
It is so important to come prepared with 2 or more questions for your employer. This is a great way to show them that 1) you’ve done your research and 2) you’re eager to learn more about the company. Some of my favorite questions to ask are: how long have you been with the company? What’s your favorite thing about working here? What does a typical work day look like for this role?
In brief, job interviews can be nerve-racking, especially if it’s a position you’ve been wanting for a long while. But it’s important to remember that interviews aren’t just about proving why you’re the right fit for the job—they’re also about finding a workplace that aligns with your values and goals. So go in prepared, stay true to yourself, and go after that dream job with confidence!
